Istanbul dialogue shows that Russia, Ukraine ‘on right track’ — Putin

Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky who led the Russian delegation at the Istanbul talks said earlier that the Russian side was satisfied with the negotiations’ outcome

SIRIUS /Federal Territory/, May 19. /TASS/. The resumption of dialogue between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkey is a sign that the countries are on the "right track" towards peace in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.

"Negotiations between the sides in the Istanbul meeting have resumed, suggesting that, in general, we are on the right track," Putin told journalists following a telephone call with US President Donald Trump on May 19.

Putin added that Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov would later report on the details of Monday's telephone conversation between the two leaders.

"If something needs to be clarified, then Press Secretary Peskov and Mr. Ushakov will clarify details of our talks with President Trump on the phone later," Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters at a press conference after talking to the US president.

US President Trump stated earlier on his Truth Social account that he had a scheduled telephone call with Putin at 10 a.m. Washington DC local time (2:00 p.m. GMT or 5:00 p.m. Moscow time) on May 19.

The US president specified that he intended to discuss the Ukrainian settlement and trade with Putin. Trump added that following the conversation with the Russian leader, he intended to speak with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and some leaders of NATO member states.

Putin and Trump held their last phone call on March 18.

On May 16, talks were held between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey’s Istanbul. Following the meeting, Moscow and Kiev agreed to swap the prisoners of war under a "1,000 for 1,000" formula, present their visions for a potential ceasefire, outlining it in detail, as well as continue the negotiation process.

Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky who led the Russian delegation at the Istanbul talks this month said that the Russian side was satisfied with the negotiations’ outcome. He also added that Ukraine requested direct talks between the countries’ leaders and Russia "took note of this request.".
